Cupping therapy

(Rubber or plastic/No Fire)

A form of alternative medicine in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction and localized pressure. This therapy creates space and separation in the tissues that allows the therapist to work more effectively bringing fresh blood to the area, improving circulation, to aid in the healing of that area. Cupping therapy is mainly performed, but not limited to, one's back because there are five Meridians (pathways in the body which the energy of life called Qi ("chi") flows through). When these meridians are opened, the internal energy is able to flow through the whole body.

Cupping Therapy affects the body similar to a deep tissue massage. It is possible to experience slight Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness that feels similar to a long hard workout. However, the feel of cupping is not as intense as deep tissue massage. Thanks to the nature of negative pressure therapy, the work is deep without being painful although occasionally it can be uncomfortable. Remember to check in with your therapist to make sure the therapy is within your personal comfort level.
If you are on blood thinners, are a hemophiliac, diabetic, or have high or low blood pressure, shorter, lighter techniques are recommended and must be used for your overall wellness. Those with low blood pressure should warn the therapist ahead of time as you'll need extra time to rest before rising after a treatment and accommodations will need to be made.
